The Bikes

The original Moulton bicycle was developed in the late 1950s, and was launched in 1962 by its inventor and designer, Dr Alex Moulton. The new bicycle soon became a classic of its time, and it remained in production in various forms until 1974. Its suspension and superior ride and road holding were amongst the reasons for its success.

A period of further development resulted in the launch of the Alex Moulton AM range of Advanced Engineering Bicycles in 1983. The advantages of a lightweight space frame, high pressure tyres and further improvements to the suspension enhanced the performance of these excellent machines. The AM range has remained in production ever since, but it was joined in 1998 by the New Series Moulton, which further developed and refined the design of Moulton bicycles, and incorporates the unique Flexitor front suspension, as well as further improvements to the rear suspension and reduction in the weight of the frame. The New Series models are under continuous development, and the range is growing.

Early in 1992 the Moulton APB (All Purpose Bicycle) range was introduced, manufactured under licence by W R Pashley. These models increased the versatility of the Moulton bicycle, and provided a modern Moulton at a more modest price. An improved version, the TSR, was introduced in 2006. This is available in 8 speed hub gear, 27 speed hybrid gear and 30 speed derailleur versions and promises to become a popular choice with Moultoneers.

In 2002 the Japanese company Bridgestone introduced a model designed specially for them by Dr Alex Moulton, known as the Bridgestone Moulton. This recreates the general style of the original F-frame Moultons, but in a completely redesigned form, with an aluminium frame and completely new forms of front and rear suspension.
