"Classic" F Frame

The Original Moulton Bicycles

The original Moulton bicycle was launched late in 1962, and was one of the few serious and successful attempts to challenge the conventional diamond frame. It dominated the 1962 Cycle Show, where it made its first public appearance. With its small (16 inch) wheels, suspension, unisex (step through) frame and integral luggage carrying facilities it was unlike anything that had appeared before.

From the start there were models to suit the commuter, shopper, tourist and racer. Particularly novel was the Stowaway model, the frame of which separated into two parts, allowing the bicycle to be put into the boot of a small family car quite easily.

The product range was refined over the years, culminating in the Mark III. Production eventually ceased in 1974 following the takeover by Raleigh.

Some 200 000 examples of these 1960's and '70's Moultons are believed to have been built, and in addition to being exported, some were also built overseas under licence.

Production of the newer AM series did not start until 1983. During that period Moulton Preservation was founded (by Michael Woolf, who still runs it) and has ensured that whenever possible spare parts and technical advice are available to keep the original type of Moultons running.
